The British racer, who took the championship lead from Piastri by a single point after taking the win in the Mexican Grand Prix recently, outpaced the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Before then, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver for most of the session before sprint qualifying due at 6:30 PM GMT. The Red Bull star, the other racer in realistic title contention, lying 36 points behind Norris, was classified in 17th position as his team opted for a alternative strategy. Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to have an incident, albeit lightly, when he spun at Turn Four during the early running. Tsunoda spun out over the track edges before sliding over the escape zone, and was lucky to avoid just a minor contact of the fence.
