"When are you interviewing Haim?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: The sender also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're not alone. Multiple high-profile fans have also petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the most iconic ensembles, they're a close trio. Their visuals repeatedly feature them walking in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a bass'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire others to form a group."

"And thus everyone gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Nod

The group are speaking from a break, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in the running for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the female artists that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The project came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The themes track breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in real life who they want to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Style

That newfound toughness called for a fresh approach – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Camaraderie

The trio's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an worldwide fan base.

Yet the band will always be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
